Comparative study of copper oxidation protection with graphene and hexagonal boron nitride

The use of protective barriers to isolate a metal surface from an aggressive environment is common way inhibit its degradation. We used ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy assess in real time the evolution copper and contextual action 2D material coatings (graphene hexagonal boron nitride) towards oxidation. In isobaric experiment with 2 mbar oxygen, bare oxidizes near room temperature, while both materials can retard onset temperature for first oxidation by more than 120 °C. However, their protection mechanism different: nitride behaves straightforwardly, forming effective barrier until it etched away at high temperatures, leading rapid cuprous then cupric oxide.
